I was bowling this weekend with other league bowlers at the local AMF bowling center. In between frames, we're all very talkative. One of the conversation topics centered on restaurants in the area. All Mobile Apps, whether they are for the iPhone, BlackBerry or any other device are never used in a picture perfect environment. There are always distractions that fight for the attention of the mobile users. So, the interactive nature of the app must be designed accordingly. You can't design the app by keeping a certain location, situation, or environment in mind. It needs to be designed by keeping the distractions in mind. Its visuals must be such that they immediately grab the attention of target users. The funny thing is that in most cases, Mobile Apps are used to provide a distraction. So, your design must be able to "distract" a user for a sufficient period of time.

Something else to keep in mind is to distinguish between mobile apps that are "native" vs. those that need access to your provider and/or Wi-Fi. Once downloaded to your phone, you can use native apps whenever you like and get the information you need with no carrier or Wi-Fi access. Many of the GPS apps can be frustrating because they often require carrier/Wi-Fi access and if your coverage is not good, the app does not work well.
